Origin of the Haflinger Horse

Haflinger Horses originated from the Tyrolean mountains on the border of Northern Italy and Austria. The village people needed horses that were surefooted for packing in the trecherous mountain terrain. The Austrians refer to them as the "Golden Palomino Ponies". Their true origins are unknown but there are some great legends. One says that early settlers of the Sarn Valley in Austria bred their Arabian type horses with the Mountain Ponies that can be traced back to the 6th century. Some stories trace them back to the Orient. In any event, most agree that in 1868, the Arabian stallion, El Bedavi XXII was used to improve the herd. El Bedavi's son, Folie, foaled in 1874, became the foundation sire of the Haflinger breed as we know it today.

Mares & Foals in Austria
The Austrians were responsible for most of the breeding and development of the Haflinger Horse. The Palomino was named after the village of Hafling. This village lies in the mountainous area of the southern Tyrol region. This area in Austria is very harsh. The Haflinger has adapted quite well to the environment making them known for their strength, power and hardiness. The Haflinger today is found in most parts of the world being bred in over 20 countries. The Haflinger is particularly popular in Switzerland and Germany as a pleasure horse.
In North America today, the Haflinger is still used as a farm horse by the Amish. Mostly though, they are being used for pleasure riding, driving, eventing, dressage, packing, horse camping, and as a family pet. They are an extremely intelligent and willing breed making training a breeze. Pound for pound, Haflingers are stronger than larger horses. They are big boned and well muscled, with a powerful build, sturdy bone and large hooves. Most do not need shoes. They have a long life span, some living up to 35 years old. The Haflinger is the perfect breed for families with children. Because of their temperment, beauty and shorter stature, they appeal to "baby boomers" and are quickly becoming a breed of choice. If you want a gorgeous, intelligent, willing, gentle, family, all purpose horse, then you should consider the HAFLINGER!!!
